I’ve been hearing a lot about a game called DiceAFARI in recent weeks but I’ve been a little on the distracted side of things to give it a proper look and any attention. I’m suddenly feeling sad about that. The game is nearing the end of it’s run on Kickstarter and it looks like a long shot to make it’s relatively meager goal.

This is a little mind boggling to me. The game is being published by Stratus Games which I know as a publisher with great quality products (Eruption is one of their recent games, and I’m a fan of Launch Pad-though I never won a free copy despite trying several times!)  Stratus is good, makes good games, and should be able to easily make the small goal they have listed this time.

…But with 15 days left they haven’t even scratched the $1,000 dollar mark. That’s a real shame. I’d hate to think this game won’t happen because of this, but I hear that it might.

DiceAFARI, as I understand it, is basically an area control game/set collection game where your moves are determined by dice. I don’t think that’s how they’re describing it… but I think they’re pushing for a slightly different audience.

The board is series of terrain tiles that are arranged differently in each game. Photo tokens, which you will collect are placed between each tile. You roll the dice and dependent on the terrain you roll (after up to three rolls) determines where you can place your Travelling tokens. You get to pick up one photo token each turn.

The Travelling tokens are where the game really lives. Where you place is important. Your token stays on that tile until removed by another player… Your travelling token placement is strategic and your photo choice is important. Watch what your opponent takes/needs block them…but beware of being blocked yourself. Scores are based on sets taken.

DiceAFARI has a lot of the passive interaction I love, with a little of the aggressive interaction all my friends love. It’s a simple concept that seems easy to learn and play. The game looks to play quick with tension and fun wrapped around a neat little theme. Really, I’m glad I’m backing this game and I can’t wait for my copy to arrive.

The bottom line is DiceAFARI Needs you to help make it a reality. …and you SHOULD want to help this game out. I just can’t be any more plain than that. It has all the elements of a great game: Replayability, just enough randomness, a good amount of strategy, easy to learn, interesting choices, cute theme and great art.

So… get ready to go on a Safari with dice. Get your tickets and kick in for this game. You won’t regret it.
